Sonos has been around a long time and despite being proprietary it's supported by third-party vendors from Onkyo to Roon.Īmazon Multi Room Music (MRM) is a decent stab at multiroom but only one non-Amazon product supports it - the Polk Command Bar. Sonos has long been the master of multiroom music, and if you want to be able to listen to and control music in multiple rooms, then the Sonos One is the winner here. The Echo Studio has a bigger soundstage too, great for filling larger rooms with sound. This is great if you're watching Jack Ryan on TV or playing rock and roll, less good if you're trying to listen to some relaxing music. The Amazon Echo Studio, on the other hand, has absolutely zero chill: Everything sounds huge and exciting all the time. It also has surprisingly deep bass for such a small enclosure. It's not going to have you on the edge of your seat, but it sounds good with almost everything. What do you want your smart speaker to do? Provide music in the kitchen, or connect to your TV to play movies? The Sonos One is one of the best speakers for background listening: just dotting around the place and playing music where you need it. It's the winner between the two if you want to play loud. ![]() I had no issues with the microphones on the Echo Studio and was impressed by how it could still hear me, even though it was able to go much louder than the Sonos One. Play your music loud if you want, and Alexa can still hear you. Sonos' Achilles Heel, if there is one at all, was its microphone, but based on my tests of the second-gen Sonos One, the company seems to have improved the mic's sensitivity. Be aware there's no Bluetooth playback here, just Wi-Fi. While Sonos' app is still pretty easy to use, you can likely use your favorite service's app instead. Sonos also supports dozens more music services than the Echo - and many, such as Spotify, offer direct control from the app. The Sonos One's killer feature is that you can control it with either Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, though sadly you can't switch between them on the fly - you have to use the app to switch. ![]() Buying the Echo just for that, you'd run out of stuff to listen to pretty quickly. Sadly, its claims to immersive surround music amount to a bit of a gimmick. One of the biggest is the ability to connect to a TV and replay Dolby Atmos streams. On paper the Echo Studio offers more features for the money than the Sonos One. The Amazon Echo Studio is a large table-top speaker. Other diseases such as glaucoma and Parkinson’s disease, however, can also cause a thinning of the retina. “The retina can provide easy access to the brain, and its thinning can be indicative of a decrease in the amount of neural tissue, which can mean that Alzheimer’s is present,” says Wax. Previous research has shown that Alzheimer’s can cause structural changes to the retina, most notably a thinning of the inner retinal layers. One such potential biomarker comes from the retina, which is literally an extension of the brain and part of the central nervous system. This is why researchers look for biomarkers they can use as early warning signs of the disease. Even then, the only way to definitively determine that Alzheimer’s was the cause is with expensive MRI and PET scans or through an autopsy.īut if early interventions such as drugs and mental exercise can halt disease progress, patients can have a greatly improved quality of life. (Credit: Duke)Ĭurrently, doctors can only diagnose Alzheimer’s disease after a patient begins to show symptoms of cognitive decline. The green represents amyloid deposits that are thought to correlate with Alzheimer’s disease. “Our hope is that we can use this insight to create an easy and cheap screening device that wouldn’t only be available at your doctor’s office, but at places like your local pharmacy as well.” A fluorescence image of retinal layers taken with a confocal microscope from wild, healthy mice (right) and mice genetically bred to show symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (left). “Previous research has seen a thinning of the retina in Alzheimer’s patients, but by adding a light-scattering technique to the measurement, we’ve found that the retinal nerve fiber layer is also rougher and more disordered,” says Adam Wax, professor of biomedical engineering at Duke University. The device can measure both the thickness and texture of the various layers of the retina at the back of the eye, potentially offering a widespread early warning system for the disease. ![]() A new imaging device could detect a biomarker of Alzheimer’s disease in the retina, research in mice indicates. ![]() United Ag & Turf is on the Farm Equipment Dealer 100™ (a ranking of the top 100 North American farm equipment dealers - by number of locations, which provides information on total and ag stores, brands, geographies served, employees, history, executives and ownership/company profile information. It’s true that Fitbit’s sleep staging is only correct in these 30 second blocks slightly more than two thirds of the time and, moreover, this fact is not communicated to users in the Fitbit app. If you’re thinking this accuracy is low, well, that depends on the context. That’s where Fitbit comes in: the watch’s sensors can classify sleep stages with 69 percent accuracy in any given 30 second time window, according to a paper published by Fitbit scientists in 2017. But most of us don’t have polysomnogram equipment at home, or a physician to read it. How do doctors and scientists determine what stage of sleep a person is in? This is done using a technique called polysomnography, which uses many bodily sensors, including EEG, to determine if a person is in N1, N2, N3, REM, or awake. The first two stages, N1 and N2, are considered light sleep, and N3 is considered deep sleep. There is only one stage of REM sleep, but multiple stages of NREM. Because vivid consciousness occurs during REM sleep, the EEG recorded during this sleep stage basically just looks like the EEG of a person who’s awake. If we record electrical brain activity while a person sleeps using a technique called EEG, we see that brain waves become slower and larger in amplitude, a hallmark of internal brain synchronization, as the person progresses into deeper and deeper sleep. This pattern then reverses itself until a person eventually either wakes up or enters REM sleep. As you fall asleep, your brain becomes more internally synchronized, allowing less information to be processed. Although researchers have learned that volunteers in sleep labs do recall having some sort of conscious experience most of the time when awakened from NREM sleep, the quality of these experiences seem to differ from the vivid dreams of REM sleep. Sleep can be broadly divided into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, when a person is most likely to be dreaming, and non-REM (NREM) sleep, when a person is more likely to be in a dreamless sleep. Next, we need to understand the different stages of sleep. The Fitbit Versa also features an SpO2 sensor for measuring blood oxygenation, but Fitbit is not yet using this feature to tell you about your sleep (more on this later). PPG measures blood flow based on how green light from an LED on the back of the watch is reflected by the body.īasically, Fitbit looks at how much you’re moving and how often your heart is beating to infer whether you’re awake, in a deep sleep, a light slumber, or dreaming. To learn about how Fitbit can monitor my sleep, I tracked my nightly slumbering with a Fitbit Versa watch for two months. (Full disclosure: I received this product free of charge from Fitbit to review.)įirst, how does a Fitbit watch monitor sleep? The Fitbit Versa infers when you’re sleeping and what stage of sleep you’re in using an accelerometer (an instrument for measuring bodily accelerations of the wrist) coupled with a technique called optical photoplethysmography, or PPG. As I’ve discussed in previous posts, sleep is essential for draining the brain of toxins linked to Alzheimer’s disease and for consolidating memories from the previous day. Getting a sufficient quantity and quality of sleep is not only a core component of health, but often an underappreciated one. ![]() ![]() But one of the smart watch’s most useful features is arguably what it monitors while you’re burning the fewest calories: your sleep. When you hear the word “Fitbit,” you probably think about logging steps, calories, and cardio. If someone had told me a year ago that he sleeps with his watch on at night, I’d probably wonder just how eccentric of a personality I was dealing with. ![]() Niche Inclusion: This card might make your deck if you have a deckbuilding restriction, whether it’s self-imposed based on theme, a power level consideration, or a card availability concern. Command-line and code examples are one way to bring the main topics into focus together. The documentation for OpenSSL is spotty beyond the man pages, which become unwieldy given how big the OpenSSL toolkit is. Furthermore, calling OpenSSL command-line utilities begins with the term openssl. For example, OpenSSL functions often have SSL in the name even when TLS rather than SSL is in play. Nonetheless, it is common to refer to SSL/TLS as if they are one and the same protocol. TLSv1 and SSLv3 are alike, but not enough so to work together. SSL is versioned (e.g., SSLv2 and SSLv3), and in 1999 Transport Layer Security (TLS) emerged as a similar protocol based upon SSLv3. This feature is implemented with hash functions, which likewise come with the OpenSSL toolkit. For example, SSL supports message integrity, which assures that a received message is the same as the one sent. These two key SSL services, in turn, are tied to others that get less attention. Even if eavesdropper Eve intercepts an encrypted message from Alice to Bob (a man-in-the-middle attack), Eve finds it computationally infeasible to decrypt this message. This process safeguards network conversations. ![]() The receiver then decrypts each received message.
